A Sample Conference Presentation
A 5-minute recording + poster of preliminary findings for one of my dissertation chapters
Last week I presented some of my dissertation work in a “flash session” at the Population of America Association (PAA) Annual Meeting. A flash session means each presenter gives a 5 minute presentation that should act as a short of commercial for your poster presentation, which will be up for attendees to view immediately after the oral presentations. Since this effort produced two (hopefully!) easily-digestible snapshots of some of my current work, I thought I’d share them here.
This is a recording of me practicing my presentation ahead of the real thing. It’s awkwardly kind of whisper-y? A less heavily Philly ASMR than the queen of it, but a bit too alike for my taste…but, I’m not recording it again so here ya go! And the eyeless avatar in the bottom corner? Me, apparently, but can’t get rid of it. So watch this with a grain of salt1.
After all the presenters finished their 5 minute slide decks, we moved into the poster presentation portion of the session. These can be awkward, with folks trying to read the poster but not wanting to talk to you about it, or people dropping in midway through a discussion and you feel like you need to bring them into it, even if you’re not totally sure that’s what they want, etc. But I am happy to report that I had a small group that came right away and stayed a while, building off each other’s questions and really engaging with the poster and my further elaboration about the study. Really pleasantly surprisingly positive experience overall! Below is a jpeg of the poster - it was printed as a 4x3 poster2, so zoom in to read each section if it appears too small and just imagine it in large form.
Because this is a work in progress, please do not distribute without my consent. But if you know someone who might be interested in this work, please reach out or connect me with them directly! And if you have any questions, comments, or general feedback for me about this presentation, don’t keep it to yourself! Please let me know!
does that saying still work with a different verb?
the typical size for academic conferences…something I learned the hard way my first time ever presenting a poster back in November 2023…see below for a picture of my Joel Embiid-sized project next to me, 4 months pregnant and smiling through the embarrassment of not knowing this part of the hidden curriculum.
